It is my sad duty to report that U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, who was the chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has died from what his family is describing as ” complications concerning longstanding health challenges.” Elijah was 68 years old at the time of his death.
Elijah was a great clarion voice for American democracy. He was especially passionate about protecting the right to vote, including delivering this passionate speech in defense of voting rights, one year after his mother died:
Elijah understood better than most, in fact, better than me, that the right to vote is vitally important to ensuring that the American people have a say in how their government treats the American people. If we commit ourselves to ensuring that the American people are able to participate in democracy, then we will be honoring Elijah’s legacy.
Rest in power, Elijah.
